ST. PADRE PIO SHRINE, ATHURUGIRIYA

St. Padre Pio Shrine, Athurugiriya, is in the Archdiocese of Colombo and is the first shrine of this Saint in Asia. The Shrine parish has 350 families, with Sinhalese and Tamil forming the majority. The Shrine was blessed and consecrated on 23 September 2005 by His Grace Archbishop Oswald Thomas Colman Gomis. Two important feasts are celebrated at the Shrine: 1) on 14 January, the Feast of St. Joseph Vaz, in whose name the old church was build; and 2) the Feast of the patron St. Padre Pio on the last Sunday of September. There are two relics of the Saint kept at the Shrine for public veneration. On every Thursday, the Novena to St. Joseph Vaz is recited. The novena to St. Padre Pio is on every Friday, celebrated with Benediction, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and Anointing for the sick. Cancer patients frequent the place, praying for healing of body and spirit. October devotion of the Holy rosary is also celebrated in a festive way, with the procession of the statue of Blessed Virgin Mary.
