Assisi Reimagined: A Formation Pilgrimage Through the Franciscan Heartland

Coimbatore, January 26:  Friar Shibin Payyampallil reflects on a ‘moving retreat’ marked by profound brotherhood, historic milestones, and a renewed calling during the 800th anniversary of St. Francis.

Assisi, Italy - March 2026: Last month, Friar Shibin Payyampallil embarked on a profound formation pilgrimage through the Franciscan heartland in Italy. What began as a required step in his ongoing formation quickly evolved into a deeply moving spiritual journey, offering a renewed perspective on the Franciscan calling and a true sense of peace.

Expressing sincere gratitude to the Definitory for their permission and support, as well as to the friars working in Italy for their exceptional hospitality, Friar Shibin described the experience as a “moving retreat.” Standing in the actual landscapes where the Franciscan way of life began, the visiting friars witnessed the simple, rugged habits of the first brothers, bringing history to life in a way books never could.

The journey fostered a deep sense of brotherhood among the friars. Traveling, sharing meals, praying, and walking together allowed them to experience the simple, communal life of the early Order. The pilgrimage included reflective visits to the quiet beauty of Saint Clare’s Basilica and the exact spot at San Damiano where St. Francis first heard God’s call, helping Friar Shibin think more deeply about his own vocation

A rare and historic highlight of the trip was a visit to the Tomb of St. Francis, which was specially opened for the 800th death anniversary celebrations of the founder. Being present during this monumental occasion provided a once-in-a-lifetime, deeply personal connection to the roots of the Order. The itinerary also included joyful visits to the brothers in Pescia, Siena, Seraphicum, and Padua. Their warm kindness and hospitality served as a living example of a true Franciscan family gathering.

The spiritual journey concluded with peaceful prayers in the valley of Rieti and at the Porziuncola. This restorative experience bridged academic studies with real, lived faith, serving as a powerful reminder that being a Franciscan is about engaging in a living, breathing mission for today. Returning with a heart full of gratitude, Friar Shibin noted that the journey reaffirmed a core truth of their mission: “the world is our cloister,” and they are called to find God and serve others wherever their path may lead.

The day’s proceedings were meticulously organized by the Master of Social Work (MSW) students, ensuring a seamless and engaging program for all who attended. Additionally, National Cadet Corps (NCC) students actively participated, bringing a strong sense of discipline and youthful energy to the celebrations.

The inspiring gathering successfully fostered a sense of unity and national pride among everyone present. The program concluded on a warm note with fellowship over high tea and snacks, with the gathering joyfully dispersing at 11:30 a.m.
