EVANGELIZATION IN ASIA HIGHLIGHTED AT CHENNAI SYMPOSIUM

Franciscan Family Reflects on Missionary Spirituality and the Future of Evangelization in Asia

30 July 2026 | Chennai, India – A significant Franciscan contribution to the evangelizing mission of the Church in Asia was highlighted during a symposium held in Chennai on 30 July 2026, bringing together members of the Franciscan Family and representatives of the wider Catholic community. The gathering provided an opportunity to reflect on the challenges and opportunities facing evangelization in the diverse and rapidly changing Asian context.

Among the speakers in the second session was Br. Alphonse Vazhappanady, OFM Conv., who reflected on the theme “Witnesses of Christ’s Endless Love.” His presentation emphasized the call of Franciscan missionaries to bear witness to Christ through a life rooted in love, fraternity, and missionary presence. Fr. Dinh Anh Nhue Nguyen, OFM, also contributed to the symposium, enriching the reflection through his missionary and theological insights and highlighting the importance of missionary formation, dialogue, and a renewed understanding of the Church’s mission in Asia.

The gathering brought together members of different branches and congregations of the Franciscan Family to reflect on the challenges and opportunities of evangelization in Asia. Particular attention was given to renewing missionary spirituality and responding creatively to the changing realities of the continent. The symposium concluded with a keynote reflection on “The Future of the Franciscan Mission in Asia,” followed by the celebration of the Holy Eucharist at St. Sebastian’s Church, Chennai, and a cultural evening involving Catholic schools and religious institutions.

On 2 August, the participants concluded the gathering with a missionary pilgrimage, beginning with Holy Mass at the tomb of St. Thomas the Apostle, followed by visits to Franciscan missionary sites in the region. The symposium and pilgrimage provided a meaningful opportunity for fraternity, reflection, and renewed commitment to the Franciscan missionary vocation in Asia.
